THIS LENT STAY siLENT FOR A CHANGE
Let’s speak up with silence! Stand in solidarity with young people who don’t have a voice and join siLENT 2020!
Thank you for considering siLENT for your Parish/Community. We want to make your siLENT journey easy and stress free, so here you will find everything you need for you to kick start your siLENT journey this Lent.
We think Lent is such a great time to try something different, so why not silence? Our champion Delia Smith explains, “We have in the Church a rich inheritance of contemplative tradition and it’s in the still silent moments of life that we reach not only the heart of ourselves and who we are but the heart of God, who alone can satisfy our deepest desires.” So take time to give up the things that fill life with noise and restlessness. And by staying silent, you are standing in solidarity with young people who don’t have a voice, for whom silence isn’t a choice.
HELP REACH A MILLION A ‘Million Minutes of Silence’ is a really simple idea - each minute is sponsored to raise money for projects supporting young people. Throughout Lent 2020 schools, parishes, communities and individuals will help clock up a million minutes of silence! Will you join us?
HOW YOUR SILENCE MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Million Minutes celebrates young people and gives grants to support them to change their lives and their world.
In 2017 Million Minutes supported ‘Field of Dreams’ in Basildon, a holiday programme run by young volunteers from the Catholic Parish. Some of the 100 children who attended never leave Basildon during the holiday period and Field of Dreams provides them with activities and new experiences. One volunteer explained: “We know that for some of these children, coming here really is the safest place for them to be during their holiday.”
Your sponsorship will help young people start projects like this to change lives for the better.
Ideas of how to take part
A collective silence in groups - e.g. a youth club
24 hours straight. Choose a date in Lent (26 Feb-12 April 2020), and start getting sponsored.
A Silent Relay - commit to staying silent in a ‘relay’. e.g. you could stay silent for the whole day and ‘pass’ the silence on from person to person
No Phone or Social Media - Instead of spending all those hours online, give it up for Lent, and then spend just half an hour a day in silence (and an hour on Good Friday and Holy Saturday). It adds up to 24 hours.

At Million Minutes we’re inspired and challenged by Catholic social teaching (CST). It lies at the heart of what we’re trying to do. At its centre is the basic concept of The dignity and equality of each human person. Please familiarize yourself with the principles and watch our animation here: millionminutes.org/CST
