THIS LENT STAY siLENT FOR A CHANGE
Let’s speak up with silence! Stand in solidarity with young people who don’t have a voice and join siLENT 2019!
Thank you for considering siLENT. We want to make your siLENT journey easy and stress free, so here you will find everything you need to kick start your siLENT journey this Lent.
We think Lent is such a great time to try something different, so why not silence Our champion Delia Smith explains, “We have in the church a rich inheritance of contemplative tradition and it’s in the still silent moments of life that we reach not only the heart of ourselves and who we are but the heart of God, who alone can satisfy our deepest desires.” So take time to give up the things that fill life with noise and restlessness. By staying silent, you and your students are standing in solidarity with young people who don’t have a voice, for whom silence isn’t a choice.
HELP REACH A MILLION A ‘Million Minutes of Silence’ is a really simple idea - each minute is sponsored to raise money for projects supporting young people. Throughout Lent 2019 schools, parishes, communities and individuals will help clock up a million minutes of silence!
HOW YOUR SILENCE MAKES A DIFFERENCE
The streets of the UK can be a dangerous place. In 2008, Jimmy Mizen was killed in a violent attack. Every year, hundreds of teenagers are killed or injured by broken bottles, guns and knives. It doesn’t have to be this way. It’s time for an urban revolution. Million Minutes is working with the For Jimmy charity, supporting them to speak to young people about keeping safe, reconciliation and peace. With Million Minutes’ support, For Jimmy can support young people like Amy who was inspired by the charity to set up her own event based on her personal journey of being a disabled young person in Lewisham.
As Amy’s interaction with the Mizens grew so did her personal connection with the charity. Amy admired the way in which the Mizen's turned their negative narrative into an impactful one. At her event Amy was able to inform others about her disability from a young person's perspective.
Your sponsorship will support people like Amy to change their lives and their world.
Ideas of how to take part
A silent meditation
24 hours straight. Choose a date in Lent (6 March-20 April), and start getting sponsored.
No Phone or Social Media - Instead of spending all those hours online, give it up for Lent, and then spend just half an hour a day in silence (and an hour on Good Friday and Holy Saturday). It adds up to 24 hours.

At Million Minutes we’re inspired and challenged by Catholic social teaching (CST). It lies at the heart of what we’re trying to do. At its centre is the basic concept of The dignity and equality of each human person. Please familiarise yourself with the principles and watch our animation here: millionminutes.org/CST
