Jimmy Mizen Award Recipients for promoting solidarity and peace
Falmouth and Cornwall are not known for religious and ethnic diversity. But this is where 19-year old Oussama and the FXU Islamic Society have organised a series of projects, bringing people together, promoting solidarity and peace. They have organised student blood donations, teamed up with the Eco Society to clean up a local beach and developed a friendship with the Christian Union to collect and deliver food to the local food bank. The multi-faith chaplain says, “I’m not sure if they would recognise themselves as peacemakers, but it is clear to me that in trying to help others, in living their faith and upholding principles of dignity, justice and respect, they work just as hard at tackling the negative image surrounding Islam, educating students and staff on campus and all those who meet them in the local community.”
